3 Reasons Why Your Business Needs an Email List

Sooo, I got locked out of my Instagram account. All those followers I had accumulated, the content I’d shared, the positive, engaged community I’d built… it was all teetering on the fine line between the ‘forgot password?’ button and the help desk email response.

After a bit of wrestling with the Instagram gods, and admittedly lots of crying, I was finally able to regain access to my account.

But needless to say, I was still shaken up… what if I had lost all of that hard work? How would I even get in touch with my followers? They’d think I’d abandoned them with no explanation!

What if all the hours upon hours I’d spend building up my account went to waste?

Enter the savior: my email list.

Email is a surefire way to stay in contact with your audience – and it will withstand all of the sketchy app lockouts, forgotten passwords, tech downfalls, and unexpected social media blips. Your email list isn’t just your backup plan; it’s your lifeline.

If you’ve been on the fence about investing in growing your own email list, here are 4 reasons why you need to start one!

1.  You don’t own your Instagram followers

What if you lost access to your account (like me) or woke up tomorrow and Instagram went the way of Vine and ended up in the dreaded Internet graveyard? Having an email list allows you to get in touch with your audience (and potential customers) without relying on a third party like social media. Plus, if someone is subscribing to your email list, that means they genuinely want to engage with you. They are quite literally inviting you in!

2. Email allows you to serve your audience

Your goal in your business should always be to take your brand from known, to liked, to trusted. And there’s no better way to build trust with your audience than providing value-packed content that keeps them engaged. Your following will come to appreciate the consistency of your emails, and maybe they’ll even pass them along to a friend with an easy forward.

3. Email is great at generating profit

How many times have you received an email from your favorite retailer about a sale and immediately clicked through to purchase something? Your email list is full of primed potential customers who are much more likely to invest in your products or services than your followers on social media.

Like I said, they invited you in. They already know that they love your content. Mix that energy with a direct link to purchase, and you’re golden!

4. Growth is easier than on social

Picture this: you’re scrolling on Pinterest, researching tips about creating a monthly content calendar, because you haven’t found the perfect template yet. You come across an aesthetically pleasing and professional-looking pin advertising an easy-to-use, editable content calendar template. Naturally, you click on it – it’s exactly what you’re looking for!

You’re brought to a landing page that requires you to enter your first name and email to instantly download the template. You may normally be a little picky about entering your email on a whim, but you really are curious about that template. You enter your info, and your inbox flashes with the little red bubble immediately.

You open it and think to yourself: “this template is perfect! And hey, this email has some pretty valuable content. I don’t even think I’m going to click ‘unsubscribe.’ What a win.”

And that’s the power of freebies. A simple lead magnet (think: downloadable guide, checklist, template, you name it – the possibilities are endless!) passively marketed on Pinterest could be the reason your email list expands past your highest expectations.
